How to Make the Best Homemade Tacos

What makes the perfect taco? The answer for everyone will be a little different. Some people want a veggie taco, piled high with peppers, onions, and salsa. Others want as much seasoned meat as possible, whether it’s shrimp, steak, chicken, or anything else. All of this being said, there are some tried and true pieces of advice that will make your homemade taco fantastic, no matter which variety you make.

Tip #1 Focus on the Tortilla

Your taco doesn’t start with what’s inside; it begins with the tortilla itself. If you have the time, your taco will be unbelievably tasty if you make the tortilla yourself. It’s easier than you think! Simply add water to masa flour. Then, you form a dough and press it or roll it out. After the dough is formed, roll it out thinly and then cut out rounded shapes a few inches wide. Over a medium-heat skillet, place your tortilla down, making sure to flip on both sides until the tortilla is slightly puffed up and cooked through.

Tip #2 Get Your Ratio Right

You have the perfect tortilla, and it’s time to fill it with your favorite meats and veggies. Taco toppings can come in many different incarnations, but the right ratio is essential. It ’s important to consider the overall balance of the ingredients you choose. Pair your protein with toppings that compliment the flavor. If you add too many fresh toppings, your taco will be cold. With too many salsas and sauces, your taco could quickly turn wet and soggy.

Tip #3 Use Fresh Salsa

When cooking, the more fresh ingredients you use, the better. This is particularly true when it comes to choosing salsa for your tacos. You want it to taste wonderful, and add the right texture to your dish. If the salsa is chilled from the fridge, this could cool the whole taco. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, make the salsa yourself!
