What Is Horchata and How Is Made?

horchata

Horchata, or agua de horchata in Spanish, is a creamy and refreshing beverage that originated in North Africa. Horchata de arroz is one of the most popular varieties of horchata in Mexico and Guatemala. The deliciously refreshing drink has made its way to the United States, where it can be found throughout taquerías and other specialty stores. It is traditionally made of white rice soaked in water, flavored with cinnamon, and sweetened with granulated sugar.

Since locals love it in Latin America, its popularity is growing among people around the world. But is a constant question how is it traditionally made or how to make horchata? First, let’s know the origins of its name!

Why Is Called Horchata?

This beverage’s Mexican version debuted in the 16th century, and it comes from an ancient Roman tonic manufactured with barley.

The word horchata derives from Latin, specifically two words: Hordeum (barley) and Hordeata (a beverage made with barley). Despite the name, horchata is not traditionally made with barley anymore.
